So my Aunt will be buying a new compact crossover with AWD later this year, for less than $40k. Here is what I’m currently recommending. The 2016 CX-5, and the QX50.

Requirements:

It must be new.

It must be fairly compact.

It must be able to haul 4 people and hockey bags.

It must have low finance rates.

What would Oppo do?

Personally I think one of the best looking Compact CUV’s is the Lincoln MKC.

Saw one of them in blue yesterday and it looked fantastic

Edit: better picture now:

Also, I built it for 38k with a few options on it too.

What would I do? Try to convince her to not buy a AWD CUV, and get a AWD or FWD wagon or minivan instead?

Yea, I should just give up.

I’ve driven the CX-5 a few times. Feels like the little brother of the CX-9. Handles well (for a jacked up Mazda 3), good storage space (no sloping, coupe-like roof), interior has been improved for 2015 (to make it look less 1990’s). I still distrust Mazda for long-term rust issues, but if she’s leasing it, no worries (if she’s keeping it, rust-proof it).

Out of your recommendations id say go with the Mazda, it’s cheap, efficient, and does its job well.

Another suv in this segment that is supposed to be excellent is the Tiguan. Can be pricey when loaded with options but still can be had for cheap. It’s also pretty good looking

I would buy a Tiguan, as it is very sporty and compact.

Something I just started noticing with SUV’s today. If you expect 4 biggish people and stuffs watch out for the Payload capacity. You get a group of normal sized dudes and some ski equipment and you are hitting the limit on the weight. For instance, a 2015 Golf can carry more people and luggage than a CX-5 and a QX50. Just because they jacked up the suspension on a hatchback and called it a SUV doesn’t mean it can all of a sudden carry more weight, and in most cases they are less due to the added curb weight.

We’ve been very happy with our 2015 CX-5. Never sat in the QX-50, so I can’t compare them.
